Convention Overview
The 75th Annual Convention of I.B.M. British Ring No.25, held 22nd-25th September 2011 at the Southport Theatre & Convention Centre -- the fourteenth time the British Ring had visited Southport. Events were spread across the Southport Theatre, the Waterfront Suite, the Floral Hall and the Lakeside Suite, with a revised schedule giving conventioneers a full weekend of magic. Featuring Star Lectures, the Close-Up Competition for the Zina Bennett Trophy, the Stage Competition for the British Ring Shield, Special Venue Shows, the Ali Bongo Micro Magic Marathon, the Gala Dinner, Children's Magical Showtime, a Talk Show, Stars of the Future, More History of Mystery, The Great Debate, International Close-Up Magic and an International Gala of Magic & Variety.
President Keith Cooper and his wife Pam welcomed conventioneers to Southport -- the fourteenth time the British Ring had held its convention there -- with International President Vanni Pulé attending his twenty-fifth British Ring Convention. The programme opened with the Official Opening Ceremony and Welcome to Overseas Visitors at the Southport Theatre, in the presence of the Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Paul Paschal Cummins, followed by the Opening Show introduced by Pat Fallon. Star Lectures and the Dealers' Magical Trade Fair, arranged by Jim Boyd in the Waterfront Suite, ran throughout the weekend, alongside the Close-Up Competition for the Zina Bennett Trophy and the Stage Competition for the British Ring Shield. Special Venue Shows, arranged by Peter Greenwood, took magic out to a local school, a residential home, a nursing home and a hospice, with visits from the IBM Clowns led by Clivo. Highlights included the Ladies' Afternoon with guest speaker Pam Bosworth on the history of fashion and millinery, the Gala Dinner organised by John Pye and the Fletcher Family, Bob Hamilton's Nostalgia film footage of past conventions, and The Late Gala of Magic. Saturday brought Children's Magical Showtime with Richard Cadell and Sooty, a live Talk Show hosted by Anthony Darkstone Brook, Cynthia Neptune's Stars of the Future, Eddie Dawes' More History of Mystery seminar, and the Saturday night Stage Competition for the British Ring Shield, followed by the Presentation of Awards and the Installation of incoming President Brian Miller. The convention closed on Sunday with the Convention Service, the Jeffery Atkins Memorial Lecture from Michael Finney, a Junior Workshop, the Grand Charity Auction, International Close-Up Magic, The Great Debate, and an International Gala of Magic & Variety headlined by performers from the UK, Belgium, Germany, Canada and the USA. A fun micro-magic competition, with competitors visiting as many tables as possible in around an hour and the winner decided by audience vote.
